Kitchen Renovation (Ottawa)

A Universal Design Aging-in-Place Solution

This project involved relocating a staircase and removing a fireplace. The original kitchen in this mid-century home did not serve the needs of a multi-generational family with dynamic disability needs. By removing the walls and creating an open-plan great room, the kitchen became a backdrop in a multi-functional environment. Creating a sense of coziness and comfort in a large room is challenging, and one technique was to use deep dark colours on either end, to disguise the long rectangular shape. One design objective was to be able to easily switch the space from busy and chaotic to a calm environment, as well as to be able to clean easily and quickly. Universal design elements support not only each generation but also the specific disabilities in the home.  Large sections of glazing connect the interior and exterior, flooding the great room with daylight, filtered through window treatments or exterior architectural elements. Several lighting combinations are available throughout the space, providing task lighting as needed, indirect mood lighting, and general lighting that does not cause glare. All lighting is warm and dimmable.

Wide pathways allow the use of a walker. This kitchen provides the ability to access all the main elements of the kitchen at waist level, with pull-out storage where needed and counter-height tools. Dishes and daily items are all stored at counter- or just-below-counter-height, minimizing strain. Recessed pulls prevent snagging on clothes and allow the counters to be used as a support if needed.

Each element of this bespoke kitchen is designed to support the specific disability of the users, and components of the kitchen are modifiable if a body condition worsens. Frequent rest breaks are needed, the kitchen island was designed so that the stovetop could be operated from the seating on the opposite side, which is also where prep like chopping can be done. Vertical pulls are the full height, allowing grasp at any point along the height of the door.

The kitchen allows a multi-generational family to work together – at any level of ability, strengthening bonds and creating memories.
