Bathroom Renovation

(Ottawa)

An accessible washroom with aging in place elements

This family washroom serves a multi-generational house and is the only full bathroom in a small bungalow. Some of these family members have dynamic disabilities. The homeowners were cognizant of aging in place and wanted a balance between current and potential future needs.

The shower space is designed to accommodate a potential degeneration of the disability. The door can be removed to facilitate walking aids, and blocking has been hidden in the wall to support a glass guard which would protect the storage area. If wheelchair access is required, the wall-mounted storage can be removed and relocated to the hallway. The walk-in 4' x 5' shower allows parents to bathe small children as well as serving family members with physical disabilities. Extra blocking has been built into the shower walls to support future grab bars if required. The handheld shower bar is ADA compliant, and the spray height can be adjusted with a closed fist. A lower faucet is accessible from the bench, allowing for a seated position while washing feet or filling a basin. This faucet is able to pivot and lie flat along the wall, removing it as an obstruction for those using the shower. An oversized rain shower allows for use while seated or standing, accommodating the needs of the user, and the handheld shower is also within reach of the shower seat.

All efforts have been made in this washroom to reduce the need for bending motions, as one user has a long-term back injury, and part of this is a 36" height counter. Outlets have all been raised to within easy reach. Storage is all provided at waist height. Space underneath the raised counter accommodates the need for children’s storage. The right height toilet is ADA compliant and extra blocking has been provided for additional grab bars if needed.

Another requirement of the homeowner was a selection of finishes that are easily cleaned. Wall-mounted faucets were selected to prevent the build-up of grime on the countertop. Undermount sinks allow the counter surface to be easily wiped down. A heated floor provides pain relief while simultaneously drying the floor. A hidden niche near the toilet provides storage for toilet cleaning materials, out of the reach of small children, but easily accessible to the homeowner. The lighting design includes an indirect light in the shower that illuminates the entire washroom as a night light.
